Books That Merit Attention:

August 2010 Reviews by
Sister Laura Swan, OSB

The Yoke of Jesus: A School for the Soul in Solitude, by Addison Hodges Hart, Eerdmans Publishing, 2009. This is a gentle and poetic exploration of our spiritual formation, which Hart calls a "school for the soul in solitude." He explores the meaning of our faith, our need for stillness and solitude--something most of us crave more and more as we get older.

Simply Living the Beatitudes, by Brother Victor Antoine d'Avila-Latourrette, Liguori, 2010. Many of you are already familiar with the earthy and gentle writings of Brother Victor. The Gift of Simplicity has been popular around the Priory. Here we are reminded that the practice of the beatitudes is in the 'concrete now' where we cultivate gospel holiness, compassion, and mercy.

Field of Compassion: How the New Cosmology Is Transforming Spiritual Life, by Judy Cannato, Sorin Books, 2010. A rich conversation between scientists, theologians and poets has been taking place. When I read or hear scientists speak, I hear a beautiful symphony of explanation of the INCARNATION, of God embodied in this world. As our hunger increases for the real and authentic Divine Presence in our midst, often it's the scientists and poets who hold those words. Cannato's second book does an excellent job of explaining some of the conversation but also reminding us of how this conversation impacts our spiritual journeys in practical ways.

Now that You've Gone Home: Courage and Comfort for Times of Grief, by Joyce Hutchison and Joyce Rupp, Ave Maria Press, 2009. Grief is a landscape of experience where our humanity is invited to touch the divine. This collection of stories and meditations builds upon their successful first book, May I Walk You Home? --for caregivers of the very ill. This is a wonderful resource.

Haiku--the Sacred Art. A Spiritual Practice in Three Lines, by Margaret McGee, SkyLight Paths, 2009. Written by an experienced retreat leader and published haiku writer, this is an excellent resource on writing haiku, deepening your expression, composing haiku as a spiritual practice, and connecting with other haiku writers. Haiku has been selling well in our store.
