Books That Merit Attention:
Reviews by
Sister Laura Swan, OSB
The Monastic Way: Ancient Wisdom for Contemporary Living, edited by Hannah Ward and Jennifer Wild, Eerdman’s, 2007. I am not usually impressed with books of daily readings as I do so much reading already. Here I am impressed: the selections come from some unusual sources and reveal much thoughtfulness in the choices made. The readings are directed to heart formation and give us much food for thought. I highly recommend this. The Ten Commandments: Laws of the Heart by Joan Chittister, Orbis, 2006. Sister Joan brings her usually straightforward, insightful and prayerful reflections to the Ten Commandments. For those who thought God’s commandments were old-fashioned and passe, spend some time with Joan.
Praying with the Benedictines: a Window on the Cloister by Guerric DeBona, Paulist, 2007. This is a nice short collection of writings by Benedictines over the centuries, each titled with a theme, and appropriate for our Lectio Divina..
Facing Forgiveness: a Catholic’s Guide to Letting Go of Anger and Welcoming Reconciliation by Loughlan Sofield, Carroll Juliano and Bishop Aymond, Ave Maria, 2007. This is a practical, earthy and very human resource for facing into our anger, the necessary heart transformation toward forgiveness and the work of reconciliation. An excellent resource for all.
The Interior Castle of Teresa of Avila with Commentary by Dennis Billy, Ave Maria, 2007. We should never neglect the classics. St. Teresa of Avila was declared a Doctor of the Church for her profound writings on prayer life and the interior search for God. Fr. Billy’s commentary helps the new student of St. Teresa feel more confident in approaching her writings, which are surprisingly contemporary.
The Selfless Way of Christ: Downward Mobility and the Spiritual Life by Henri Nouwen, Orbis, 2007. This is Nouwen’s simple and honest reflections on the realities of imitating Christ’s path of ‘downward mobility’ in contrast to our society’s celebration of ‘upward mobility.’ His wisdom is graced with drawings by Vincent van Gogh.
