All proceeds from the sale of this festive calendar go to support the Sisters and ministries of St. Placid Priory. Many thanks to Renata and Walter for this lovely and useful creation!

The Benedictine Tradition
edited by Sister Laura Swan

image of book cover

While she was on sabbatical after two terms as prioress of our community at St. Placid, Sister Laura was asked to edit a book on our Benedictine tradition as part of a series by Liturgical Press (series editor, Phyllis Zagano). This book is available in The Priory Store.

Norvene Vest, a Benedictine oblate and author of several books, says "Sr. Laura Swan’s The Benedictine Tradition is a lovely resource of Benedictine riches for anyone who desires to go more deeply into the nature of the Benedictine life of the spirit. From a 1500-year tradition, she has lovingly selected fourteen figures or groups, each representing a significant quality of Benedictine life. Each chapter begins with a quotation from Benedict’s Rule giving a clue to the quality for which this Benedictine is chosen. A very useful and helpful introduction to teach figure follows, along with some lovely selections from each one’s writings. I found myself slowing down as I read, to be nourished at leisure by the profound words of these persons committed to the Benedictine way. Sr. Laura closes with a chapter quoting from Benedictine prioresses as they reflect in writing on the monastic tradition in light of the demands of contemporary society. Those reflections offer a mirror for the whole of Sr. Laura’s book, which serves as a meditiation on how to be ‘in but not of the world,’ as a witness and sign of the love of Christ."

Engaging Benedict
by Sister Laura Swan

image of book cover

Nearly fifteen centuries ago, Benedict of Nursia wrote a rule for Christians who wanted to live, work and pray together in community. With its core values of contemplation, hospitality and simplicity, the rule remains as useful and fresh today as it was when Benedict created it in Italy those many centuries ago.

But the Rule is not without its difficulties in contemporary practice. Sister Laura Swan looks at the Rule with a critical eye, seeking to unpack those parts that are problematic and to uncover gems that support the yearnings of todays seekers. She offers women and young people who find obstacles in the Rule some insights that resonate with their experience and yet are faithful to the challenge of the Rule. By wrestling with the Rule, and hence taking it seriously, Sister Laura offers readers guidance on many difficult and painful questions.

WHAT'S NEW AT THE PRIORY STORE

by Sister Sharon McDonald, OSB

Spring - April 2009

St. Benedict in his Rule says: “We believe the Divine Presence is everywhere.” God is revealed in the ordinary. This is called the mystery of the Incarnation.

One of the purposes of the Priory Store is to support people in finding and celebrating the presence of God in the ordinary.

For example, books on Spirituality invite us to reflect on our actual experiences. Books on Scripture also invite us into the experience of having new hearts and new eyes with which to see God everywhere. Other concrete examples of encountering God are found in our family and church celebrations of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion.

In the Second Eucharistic Prayer we pray: “We thank you, God, for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you.”

The Priory Store is a space where we can put our roots into the earth of God’s ever-present Grace. We stand, like a tree, rooted in the Mystery of God’s abiding presence. When we surround ourselves with Beauty in word, image and sacramentals, we allow the tree of our life to be transformed and bear fruit for family, for ministry. Drawing up life through our roots we bring blessing to our homes and faith communities!

The Priory Store welcomes as payment VISA, MasterCard, American Express and Discover. We continue gratefully to accept telephone orders and special orders for books and religious articles.

The Store, located off the lobby in the Priory, is open Monday-Friday Noon to 3:00 PM, and on Saturday 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
