FUNERAL: Friday, February 26 at 1:00 pm
Sister Mary (formerly Lydia) Walczewski, age 90, of St. Placid Priory, Lacey, Washington, died at Providence St. Peter’s hospital on February 20, 2016. She was born December 7, 1925 in Gilman, Minnesota to Peter and Julie (Landowski) Walczewski.
Sister Mary entered St. Benedict’s Convent in St. Joseph, Minnesota and made her Monastic Profession on July 11, 1946. She joined the staff at St. Cloud Hospital, St. Cloud, Minnesota.
Sister Mary was a founding member of St. Placid Priory which became an autonomous monastery in 1952. Sister Mary served her monastic community at Visitation parish convent, Tacoma, WA; Holy Rosary convent, Tacoma, WA;
All Saint’s convent, Puyallup, WA, where she also filled in as Second Grade teacher one year; and especially at St. Placid Priory, Lacey, WA. Sister Mary earned her Licensed Practical Nurse degree at St. Peter Hospital, Olympia, WA, in 1966, and added nursing to her many skills. She worked at St. Peter Hospital and nursed our sick and frail Sisters. She also did cooking, sewing, and housekeeping at the Priory. She delighted in working in the yard, always wanting the outdoors to be immaculate. She felt a strong sense of stewardship of the earth. Sister Mary was often heard to say, “How can I help?”
In her later years, Sister Mary became a fiber artist. She spun wool, often winning awards at the county fairs. She needle-felted gorgeous birds. She was often found at the puzzle table, on short breaks from her other projects.
Sister Mary lived with a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother. She prayed at least three rosaries daily. The Divine Office was important to her. Rarely did she fail to pray for vocations to our community at Mass. She honored feast days with special meals. Sister Mary’s spirituality was especially expressed through her devotion to her monastic community, her deep desire to serve others and to share in the work of the community. Sister Mary radiated joy.
Sister Mary is preceded in death by her parents, and her sisters Agatha, Frances, Gertrude, and Helen, and brother Roman. She is survived by her brothers Stanley, Bernard, Joseph, Dominic, James, and Isidore, and her sister Rose; many nieces, nephews, and cousins as well as her Sisters at St. Placid Priory.
